Carolina Sun

I told him I was worried about my life

I said that I felt lost

I wondered what could possibly be next

He said that the Carolina sun looked good on me

I asked what that had to do with anything

He kissed my cherry colored cheek and said it had to do with everything

His hand was firm and tan against my pale one and I asked him if he ever felt lost

He said he had and took me in his arms

He said that life is confusing and frustrating that there is no explanation but that we should just be happy

A tear dropped below my chin and he caught in his fingers

I said happiness is overrated and impossible

Told him I’d frogotten what happiness felt like

He said happiness was what you made it

I asked what he meant

And he smiled and said that the Carolina sun looked good on me
